Jamhuriya University of Science and Technology (JUST) is a private higher learning institution, which was officially established in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 2011 by a group of Somali scholars and intellectuals to fill the existing vacuum (in the quality) of the higher education system in Somalia by providing a higher education of international standards.
Since its establishment, JUST has advanced immensely with its student capacity, international relations and social contribution as it continues to build on that success to allow the university reach its aspirations of becoming a research institution of international reputation.

The faculty of medicine and health sciences prepares aspiring students for the challenges in the world of medicine and health sciences and allows the students to get a promising career in the short and long term. The faculty aspires to produce competent practitioners in the medical field who can contribute and innovate the lives of the nation’s citizens and overall humans. The faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences currently offers diverse learning opportunities in the fields of medicine & surgery, nursing, midwifery, medical laboratory science, public health, pharmacology as well as optometry.

Purpose of position 
The deputy Dean primarily assists the faculty Dean in the provision of leadership within the faculty, and oversight of faculty planning, performance, and quality management, the deputy dean takes responsibility for the learning and teaching portfolio with the faculty. He/she is a member of the university executive team and works closely with the dean on leadership and management matters.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Act for the dean of faculty in the absence of the dean from the University.
  • Participate in the development of strategic directions for the faculty within the context of the University’s planning framework and the University’s strategic goals.
  • Assist the dean in development, implementation and monitoring of progress of the Faculty Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate the implementation of the faculty’s Learning and Teaching, Research, and Engagement Plans.
  • Advice and assist the dean in the overall management of the Faculty.
  • Participate in and contribute to Faculty and University-wide committees as required.
  • Assume primary responsibility for faculty orientation, development and retention.
  • Collaborate with the dean to provide visionary leadership.
  • Address student concerns in relation to faculty performance/accessibility.
  • Assess and address the needs of faculty for development and instructional support.
  • Recommend and assist in developing policies, curriculum and program reviews.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of written documents such as reviews, reports, curricula, course proposals, bulletins, according to the university policies and procedures.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor the personnel activities of faculty and staff to ensure that assigned faculty and personnel are operating in a capable and efficient manner.
  • Make recommendations to hire, promote and terminate faculty and staff and evaluate their work.
  • Act in leadership capacity working with faculty, students, staff and outside organizations to develop and promote understanding and support for programs.
  • Represent the dean on various campus committees and outside organizations.
  • Teaches courses as required and in accordance with the university policies.
  • Ensure the quality of trainees (medical students and graduate students).
  • Maintain and enhance undergraduate, graduate, graduate medical education, and continuing medical educating, including providing coordinated oversight of the curriculum and curricular change.
  • Oversee the faculty research agenda including fostering of interdisciplinary programs, basic research and clinical research.
  • Assure active engagement and collaboration with community partners to improve health through partnership, outreach, health advocacy, and engaged scholarship.
  • Promote a community of diverse faculty, residents, students, and staff.
  • Together with the dean of faculty prepare and administer the budget of the faculty.
  • Develop and maintaining good relationships with students/trainees, faculty, staff, and alumni.
  • Foster professionalism, diversity, and a positive work/learning environment.
  • Report to the dean on monthly basis regarding the progress and performance of the faculty.
  • Perform any related work as assigned.

Qualifications and experience

  • Should possess a recognized Post graduate or graduate medical qualification from a recognized institution.
  • Must have a minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in the field of medicine and health sciences.
  • Must possess a minimum of 3 years experience in academic management such as head of the department, deputy dean, and dean of faculty.
  • Must have a scientific publication(s) in his field of expertise in the field of medical and health sciences.
  • Must have a good command of Somali and English languages.
